8. PERMITS

Your safety valve for quality work performed to the specifications of the local building code is found in the permit process. Permits are not just handed out for a fee. They have to be earned. If a contractor walks in with a terrible track record, he or she will likely walk out without a permit. If the last job you did was shoddy, then your reputation and your livelihood are in jeopardy.
