LCpl. Nicholas C. Kirven

Prompted by the events of September 11, 2001 and his selfless devotion to our country, Nicholas joined the United Sates Marine Corps in 2002 immediately after graduating from high school. As part of "Operation Enduring Freedom" Nicholas was killed in action on May 8, 2005 in the remote mountains of Afghanistan. As a squad leader of the 3rd Marines, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, Nicholas died fighting for the freedom of our great nation and for the people of Afghanistan.

Nicholas was not only an outstanding marine but a loving son to Michael and Beth Belle. He was his sister Pride's best friend and role model to his brother Joseph. Nicholas is an American hero who paid the ultimate price with his life to uphold our freedoms and liberties. He knew the risks associated with going to war but he was honored to fight for his country.
Let us never take our freedom for granted and always remember "FREEDOM IS NOT FREE".

The Nicholas C. Kirven, "Freedom is Not Free" Short Term Fund was established with the Northern Virginia Community Foundation by Beth and Michael Belle, to provide scholarships to high school students and to support charitable organizations, such as "Save the Children" and TAPS.
